Tourist arrivals grow 28% in January
Tourist arrivals to Nepal in the first month of 2012 recorded a substantial growth of 27.7 percent as compared to arrival figures of the same period of last year. According to figures released by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan International Airport, a total of 42,301 tourists visited the country via air during the month. All the regions showed positive growths in January, led by India and China that recorded positive growths of 29.2 percent and 107 percent respectively. In the SAARC region, arrivals from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka registered positive growth of 34.4 percent and 112.5 percent respectively. Arrivals from Pakistan, however, declined by 29.6 percent. Arrivals from Asia — except South Asia — also recorded positive growth of 42 percent with all major markets showing improved performance except Malaysia.
The arrivals from Japan, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea increased by 6.4 percent, 5.2 percent, 8.4 percent, and 7.9 percent respectively. Malaysia registered negative growth of 13.5 percent. European markets also registered healthy growth of 22.8 percent with arrivals from major markets like the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland growing by 4.7 percent, 27.9 percent, 88.1 percent and 132.4 percent respectively. However, the arrivals from Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden dropped by 3.8 percent, 9.7 percent and 59.9 percent respectively. compared to the same month last year. Arrivals from Australia, Canada and USA also registered growths of 8.6 percent, 27.8 percent, and 7.7 percent, respectively.
