Day 01: Arrival and transfer to hotel in Kathmandu Upon arrival in Kathmandu.

Our airport representative will be waiting outside the airport terminal a few metres from the exit door. Please check your name at play card. He will bring you to hotel in kathmandu. The drive from the airport to the hotel is around 20 minutes

 

Day 2: Kathmandu (1360m)

In the morning we explore Kathmandu on an organised sightseeing tour. We visit Bodhnath Stupa, one of the biggest Buddhist shrines in the world, where we observe Buddhist monks in prayer in the monasteries surrounding the stupa. We also visit Pashupatinath, the most famous Hindu temple in the country, located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. Here we see Hindu holy men (sadhus) meditating, pilgrims bathing and occasionally funeral pyres burning on the ghats. The rest of our time in Kathmandu is free for further sightseeing and exploration. In the late afternoon you will be issued with your Trek Pack and departure information for the next morning.Meals included: 1 breakfast.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Lukla to Phakding (2652m)

(Trekking: approx 3 hours) In the early morning we take the spectacular flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2827m), flying parallel to giant Himalayan mountains bordering Nepal and China (Tibet). The flight time is about 40 minutes . After landing we have time to explore the village while our Sherpa crew sort and load our trekking equipment. In the afternoon we begin our trek by descending towards the Dudh Kosi River where we join the main trail to Namche Bazaar, located just above Chaunrikharka (2713m). The walking is easy and after passing through the small village of Ghat(2550m) it is a short walk to Phakding.

Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3446m)

(Trekking: approx 7 hours) From Phakding we cross the river and head up the valley, following porters from the south that are ferrying supplies to Namche Bazaar. The trail keeps close to the river valley and is lined with beautiful blue pine and rhododendron forest that is very spectacular in the spring months, when the flowers are in bloom. We cross the Dudh Kosi River at Benkar, where there are tantalising glimpses of the snow-capped peaks of Kusum Kanguru (6369m) and Thamserku (6623m). From here it is only a short walk to Monjo (2835m), where we arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon the walking is a little tougher and includes the steep ascent to Namche Bazaar. From Monjo it is a short walk to the entrance of the national park, before we cross the Dudh Kosi River to Jorsale (2805m). The trek continues upstream on generally flat terrain, crossing back to the right bank to the confluence of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi Rivers, where we start the steep climb to Namche Bazaar. After crossing a large and stable suspension bridge high above the river, we slowly ascend at a steady pace. There are some fantastic photographic opportunities as the peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Taweche (6542m) come into view for the first time.


Day 5: Namche Bazaar (3446m) (Acclimatisation Day)

We remain at Namche Bazaar for a second night to allow for proper acclimatisation to the altitude. Namche is a prosperous village situated in a large protected hollow. It gained its importance during the period when Tibetan salt was traded for the lowland grains of Nepal. Today a limited amount of trade still exists at Namche and Tibetans are often seen in the village trading rugs and Chinese-made goods, clothing, salt and dried meat. It is recommended that you take the opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset views from the national park headquarters above the village. The stunning vista includes a superb panorama of the Khumbu peaks and great views of Everest. After breakfast, a variety of options exists. Perhaps a walk towards Thami (3810m) above the beautiful Bhote Khola River Valley or a visit to the national park headquarters to see the interesting displays of Sherpa lifestyle and culture. There is also a mountaineering display and information on the park’s flora and fauna. Your guides are on hand to offer advice and escort you on walks.


Day 06: Namche Bazaar to Thyangboche (3875m) (Trekking: approx 6 hours)

From Namche Bazaar,  climb towards the park headquarters and follow a contouring trail high above the Dudh Kosi River. Above Namche the route to Thyangboche becomes visible with the monastery seen nestling below the summit of Everest and surrounded by other Himalayan peaks. On today’s walk there are opportunities to spot local wildlife including the beautiful Danfe pheasant, often seen among the birch and silver fir forest between Shanasa and Trashinga, and Himalayan tahr, on the high ground above the trail. After reaching the reforestation nursery at Trashinga, the trail drops steeply before crossing the Dudh Kosi River at Phunkitenga (3250m) After lunch,. In the afternoon we ascend, initially steeply, through pine, fir, black juniper and rhododendron forests towards Thyangboche. The monastery and our lodge are located in a beautiful meadow surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks in a truly peaceful and tranquil setting. The most notable peaks seen from here are Kantega, Ama Dablam (perhaps the most beautiful peak in the region) and, of course, Mount Everest.


Day 07: Thyangboche to Dingboche (4360m) (Trekking: approx 4 hours)

Today it is a very  pleasant walk, ascending gradually high above theImja Khola River and passing the tea houses at Orsho before crossing the river and old glacial moraines on our way to our lodge in the settlement of Dingboche. The scenery is spectacular and although Everest here disappears behind the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge, the huge peaks that tower above the eastern end of the valley are ample compensation. We are now almost completely above the tree-line and, in clear conditions, can look out for spectacular sunsets here and on Ama Dablam.


Day 08: Dingboche (4360m) (Rest and Acclimatisation Day)

Dingboche is a beautiful patchwork of small fields enclosed by stone walls protecting the crops of barley and potatoes from the cold winds. It is occupied mainly through the monsoon months, when large numbers of yaks are brought here to graze in the valley pastures. Behind the lodge the huge rock faces of Taweche seem to soar to the heavens. Our trekking guide will advise us on activities for today, but the short excursion up the valley towards Chukkung is a worthwhile option. The views are fantastic in this valley; the towering south face of Lhotse to the north, Island Peak in the centre of the valley and the fluted ice walls of unnamed peaks that line the southern end of the valley.


Day 09: Dingboche - Lobuche (4930m) (Trekking: approx 6½ hours)

In the morning we ascend the small ridge behind the village abovePheriche Valley. From the chorten at the top, Taweche and Cholatse (6440m) make for a striking scene as they seem to lean forwards from across the valley in the west. To the north, Lobuje Peak(6119m) and the snowfields of Cho La dominate the skyline. The walking is now generally fairly flat on wide-open fields, but do take your time and ensure you are well hydrated. Late in the morning we cross the Khumbu Khola at Dughla (4620m) and take a light lunch at the foot of the huge terminal moraines of Khumbu Glacier, which flows off Everest. In the afternoon, there is a solid and quite steep climb on a rocky trail to the top of the moraines. On the crest of the ridge, we pass a line of memorial cairns, built in memory of Sherpas and other climbers who have died on the various Everest expeditions over the last 50 years. From here the view is spectacular - Pumori (7145m) and, across the border in Tibet, Changtse (7550m), are seen at the head of the valley whilst Everest remains hidden behind the towering walls of Nuptse and Lhotse.


Day 10: Lobuche - Gorak Shep (5160m) - Everest Base Camp

(Trekking: approx 3 hours to Gorak Shep, 5 hours round trip to Everest Base Camp) As the trek to Gorak Shep is relatively short, we have the opportunity for a leisurely breakfast before beginning the day’s walk. From Lobuje we follow the broad valley that runs parallel to Khumbu Glacier. A gradual ascent enables us to build the slow, steady rhythm required when walking at high altitude. When we reach the moraines of Changri Nup Glacier, we make a series of small ascents and descents over a rocky trail lined with cairns that leads eventually to the surprising glacial sands of Gorak Shep (5160m) - reached after about three hours of walking. After a quick bite we gear up accordingly to head off towards the Everest Base Camp.


Day 11: Gorak Shep - Kala Patar - Labuche (Trekking: approx 6 hours)

 

Day 12 : Labuche to Dzongla (4850m) (Trekking: approx 5 hours)

Early in the morning  trek to Kala Patar (5545m) to experience sensational sunrise views from this amazing vantage point. From the lodge the ascent is quite steep, so start very slowly and try to ascend at a steady rhythmic pace. Kala Patar is the rocky hilltop below Pumori. It is a tough walk because of the altitude, but the view from the top surpasses the wildest imagination. Returning back to lodge and having   breakfast we set off to Lobuche, where we stop for lunch. We then follow the Lobuche Khola downstream where, after a while, we take a trail to the right heading off towards Dzongla.


Day 13: Dzongla via Chola Pass - Thangnak (4600m) (Trekking: approx 6-7 hours)

The day begins very early in order to reach the top of the pass in the best possible conditions. From camp we ascend steeply on a narrow trail passing large boulders and huge rock slabs and keeping to the left of the main glacier. There are a number of cairns lining the route to the snowfield and, while the trail is well-defined, it does involve a little scrambling. Once on the snowfield the angle eases off and we soon reach the top of the pass (5420m), where the views are spectacular and include Baruntse (7220m) and Ama Dablam, as well as a sea of lesser peaks. Do not wander around the snowfield as there are crevasses and we may need to rope up for the pass crossing! The descent from the pass is steep and care should be taken as we follow the narrow rocky trail down to the Nymagawa Valley, After lunch we cross rocky scree and boulders and ascend the short distance to a small saddle that leads downhill all the way on an easy trail to the huts and tea houses at Thangnak.


Day 14: Thangnak to Gokyo Lake (4720m) (Trekking: approx 3-4 hours)

We head off towards the Ngozumba Glacier where we do a touch of boulder hopping as we pass small glacial lakes. The views are astounding as we enjoy different views of the Gokyo Valley as Cho Oyu and adjacent mountains bordering Tibet loom to the right. The trail then reaches the second lake of Gokyo, where we can see Brahminy ducks swimming in pairs and feeding on algae. From the second lake it takes another 45 minutes to reach the settlement of Gokyo where we spend the night.


Day 15: Rest day at Gokyo Lake (4720m) (Rest and Exploration Day)

Those who have opted for the morning views at Gokyo Ri have to rise early for an ascent of Gokyo Peak (5360m), while others can have a late breakfast and possibly take an optional walk up the Gokyo Valley to enjoy further magnificent scenery.


Day 16: Gokyo vio Renjola Pass lungden (4650m) (Trekking: approx 8 hours)

We have an early start as we have a long day ahead of us. The trail skirts around north of Gokyo Lake and then climbs up though scree slope as we reach a highland pasture. Looking back, we enjoy excellent views of Gokyo and the mountains in the background. We continue to climb on scree and also boulder hop towards Renjo Pass (5420m). We finally reach the top of the pass, which is marked by prayer flags, from where we can have a look into Nangpa Valleyand, looking back, we have views of Everest and Makalu. From the pass descending is tricky as we have to walk on scree and loose rocks (ropes are fixed in icy conditions to facilitate the descent). After a while we reach a glacial lake from where the valley opens up. We continue to head down the valley through open pastures for sometime before bearing right to reach the small settlement of Arya.


Day 17: Lungden - Thame (4289m)

(Trekking: approx 4-5 hours) We have a late start and descend all the way, following the Bhote KosiRiver downstream. We walk down Nangpa Valley, passing through small settlements to finally reach the village of Marlung, where we stop for lunch. From Marlung the trail continues to descend and undulate passing through the village of Taranga to reach Thami.


Day 18: Thame to Manjo (2800) (Trekking: approx 6 hours)

After breakfast we leave Thami and descend to cross the Bhote Khola on a sturdy suspension bridge. There are some impressive Buddhist rock paintings in the area and, from here and on the cliffs above and below, Himalayan tahrs are often seen. Our route continues through the village of Thamo and back to Namche Bazaar where we take a welcome break for lunch. In the afternoon we descend steeply down to the large suspension bridge over the DudhKosi River. We follow the trail through Jorsale and back to Monjo, where we take lunch. In the afternoon it is a short walk via Benkar through blue pine and rhododendron forest, with great views of Kusum Kangaru, back to our lodge in Phakding.


Day 19: Manjo to Lukla (2827m) (Trekking: approx 4½ hours)

o day is last day of trekking, where it is only a short walk on the valley before making the final climb up to the airstrip at Lukla.


Day 20: Lukla to Kathmandu by air (1360m)

We rise early in the morning to be ready for the arrival of our aircraft for the flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival in Kathmandu we are met and transferred back to our starting hotel.

 

Day 21: Free day in Kathmandu and shopping

Treks Grades

Our Treks have been graded Easy, Moderate and Strenuous depending on their difficulty. (More difficult treks are possible, but we would tend to categorise them as expeditions). We have listed a definition for each category.

We strongly advise against being too ambitious first time out – most trekkers return to Nepal again and again you can gradually increase your trek grade each time.

Easy:

 These trips can be enjoyed by anyone who leads a reasonably active life. The walking part of the trip is fairly easy, usually between 5 and 6 hours a day.
Note: Even on a easy grade trek there will be tough uphill sections on some days.

Moderate:

You will be walking 5-7 hours a day and will encounter some steep uphill and down hill sections. Some days may be at altitude. You should be fit before considering taking moderate grade trek.

Strenuous:

A combination of moderate of strenuous walks, with some very steep uphill and down hill sections, often at altitude. You will generally be walking 6-8 hours a day. You should be fit and should prepare physically before taking a strenuous trek.

Please not that the grading system is not a straight forward measure of how for you are walking.
Rather it is an overall indication ho how tough it will be and it takes into account the number of hours trekking, altitude gain/ loss and trail conditions (rough track, steep uphill etc.) and usual temperatures. So even though a trek is grade easy it does not mean you will never feel tired. Similarly inexperienced trekkers need not necessarily avoid treks graded Strenuous.

Finness

On any trek, there are some steeps ascents and descents so you require a reasonable level of fitness. The more physically fit you are, the more easily your body will adapt to hiking in the Himalayas. All treks demand a good day’s walking and it goes without saying that you should be pretty certain that you will enjoy a walking holidays before you consider trekking in Nepal. However you don’t have to be young or super-ft and age in itself is no barrier. There is physical exertion, but it is sustainable. Most people in good health who have prepared physically will have no problem in enjoying themselves. Before making your choice, things to consider are the duration of your trip. Its grading, style of accommodation and maximum and average altitude.


Altitude and Acclimatization

It is common in the Himalayas to trek above 4,500 and sometimes 5,500m. There is no need to worry unduly about altitude, but above 3,000 air becomes thinner and your performance may be affected. No one understands why some people are affected and others not.
Being young strong and fit is no guarantee of success. The only way to acclimatize is to ascend slowly. Our routes have been carefully designed based a year of experience managing possible altitude related difficulties. On this trek we do not ascend above 5,600.

Be aware that altitude sickness can be fatal, so if your leader advises you to stay at a certain altitude or descend, please do as instructed. He has the experience and is there to ensure your safety. If you do need to descend you will be accompanied by one of our team and a porter and will be well looked after. The descent may be just a short – term measure and does not necessarily mean you will be unable to complete your ascent. There is no shame in being affected or not reaching the highest point on a trek.

In addition we carry a Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC) on all of your trekking trips in Nepal. If you are suffering form altitude sickness and conditions do not allow for an immediate descent your leader will arrange for you to use the PAC. The PAC works by increasing the pressure inside the chamber, using a foot pump. At high altitude, this increased pressure delivers a therapeutically significant amount of extra oxygen which simulates a descent.

Recommended Equipment List

Essential

 

  • Towel (a small one)
  • Walking boots with ankle support

  • Sleeping bag – from October to mid march you will need a minus 20 sleeping bag. At other times of the year a minus 5 bag is adequate. Note these can be hired locally.
  • Down Jacket - this is advisable for treks form October to mid March. At other times a warm, windproof fleece jacket will be sufficient. Note that Down Jackets can be hired locally.
  • Sunglasses ( glare is a severe problem)
  • Torch (a head torch is particularly useful)
  • Spare batteries
  • Any first aid equipment (eg knee support bandages) that you think you may neeed.
  • Good quality warm gloves
  • Lodine water purification solution
  • Toilet Paper
If you on an extended journey and would rather not being these items or if you do not wish to purchase them especially for the trip, they can be hired locally for US 1-2 per day, Note that although these sleeping bags and down jackets are of good quality, they are not washed often (Frequent washing means that they become less warm) so you are strongly advised to bring your own sleeping sheet.

Our tour prices do not include insurance however it is a condition of joining our tours that travelers are fully insured for any medical expenses they might incur while traveling. At the start of your tour the Tour Leader will ask to see your insurance document and will note down the policy number and emergency contact number.
We recommended a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers repatriation and evacuation in case of a medical emergency, cancellation and curtailment as well as baggage and valuables, If your tour involves certain adventurous activates (I.e. trekking, white water rafting or scuba diving etc) You will need to make sure your policy specifically covers these activates. You may also need specific cover for expensive camera equipment.

Many credit card companies offer “complementary travel insurance” however the majority of such policies offer virtually no cover and will not be accepted as adequate travel insurance. If you are planning on using credit card insurance you must bring along proof that the policy covers medical emergencies. Failure to be able to provide such proof to the Tour Leader will result in you being compelled to purchase a new approved policy before you can join the tour.


Vaccinations

It is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain any vaccinations, Precautionary or preventative Medicines for the countries you are visiting – or any which may be required by your home country upon your return. To find out which, if any, Vaccinations are mandatory or recommended for your destination Contact your local doctor, Immunization Centre or Medical Centre for up-to-date information.

If you need to arrange vaccinations or a supply of preventative medicine (e.g. Malaria tablets), you should Contact your doctor at least two Months before you depart. Some Inoculations require more than one Visit and can take several weeks to Administer.


Carry your Certificate

You should be issued with an International Certificate of Vaccination for each vaccination. Always carry these with you on your travels; they could provide essential information for doctors in the event that you fall ill whilst traveling.


 

Malaria


Malaria is common in many parts of Africa, Asia and South America. Protection is in the form of tablets, taken either daily or weekly, or both. The course of tablets should normally begin 1-2 weeks before you depart, Continue throughout your travels and for 4 weeks after your return. Although you can obtain tablets from most pharmacies without prescription,
you must check that they are Appropriate for the area you are Visiting. There are many different Strains of malaria and a large number of them are drug-resistant. It may be Necessary for you to take a Combination of tablets for the region you are visiting.
No malaria tablets guarantee complete protection. The most Effective protection against malaria is to avoid being bitten. Mosquitoes Mostly bite at dusk and dawn so one of the best ways to minimize the Chance of being bitten is to wear long Trousers, long sleeves and socks at these times. You should take a good insect repellent and apply it liberally. Repellents with a high concentration of DEET (at least 35%) are generally considered the most effective.

Diarrhoea

Sampling the local food and drink is often one of the highlights of traveling. In most cases the food is Freshly prepared for you and is completely safe to eat, however it will probably contain ingredients that you are not familiar with or may be Prepared in a different way. This change in diet is one of the most common causes of travelers diarrhea. You can reduce the likelihood of suffering diarrhea if you treat food and drink with caution – at least in the early stages of your travels. In almost every country it is possible to buy bottled water. This is usually very cheap and a lot more convenient than trying to purify or filter tap water. Beware of ice in drinks and make sure you wash your hands frequenty.
In general we do not recommend the use of anti-diarrhea pills as in most Cases they do not cure the problem, they merely put it on hold. However, there are of course situations where ‘Blocking up’ may be desirable, for Instance if you are embarking on a long bus ride. Diarrhoea which lasts for longer than 48-72 hours, shows signs of blood or Mucus or which is concurrent with other symptoms, such as a headache or high temperature, should always be taken seriously. Dehydration

In deserts, in the tropics and at high Altitude, your body can lose a lot of water. Dehydration also occurs when you are suffering from diarrhoea. The best way to avoid dehydration is to drink plenty of fluids. In most countries you can obtain “rehydration salts” or “electrolyte Solution”. Although these do not taste great, they restore the salts lost by your body. You can also make your own rehydration mixture by adding 4 tablespoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt to one liter of clean water.
 

Emergency & Rescue

Trekkers should be aware that there is very little in the way of rescue organization for handling trekker's emergencies in Nepal. If you are trekking with a reputable trekking agency then their staff will be trained to handle most contingencies. if you are traveling independently then you will have to rely on your own initiative to handle any problems. This is why trekking alone is foolhardy in the extreme.

At all times try to be aware of the location of possible sources of help, medical clinics, police or army posts etc. Try to find out where there are working telephones or radios as you pass along the trails.

All trekkers should make sure that they are covered by a suitable travel insurance policy. This, at least, must cover the cost of a helicopter rescue, which is the only practical way of evacuating a seriously ill or injured patient from most of the trekking areas. It is essential to leave details of this policy with a responsible agency in Kathmandu. Either your trekking agency or your embassies are the obvious choices. Registering your details and intended plans with your embassy in Kathmandu is an extremely sensible step to take.

In the event that you do have a problem, and that problem cannot be solved with the resources at hand, then communications facilities must be located. Telephones or radios can be hard to find and may be a day or more away from the incident site. If it is possible to send a reliable person for help make sure that a note is sent detailing the location of the patient, the problem being experienced, specifying what help is needed. List what actions you are going to take in the interim. Fortunately, these days, helicopters are readily available, at a price, from Kathmandu and Pokhara. If a message can be sent then it is likely that a rescue can be mounted reasonably quickly.
