Annapurna Circuit Trekking

The Annapurna Circuit trekking is known as the most diverse trek of the world and one of the most popular trekking in Nepal where you can see panoramic sceneries of Himalayas including Annapurna.


There are panoramic sceneries of Himalayas, including of the Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m), Mt. Annapurna I (8091m) Mt. Manaslu (8163 m), Mt. Annapurna II (7937 m.) , Mt. Annapurna III (7555m), Mt. Annapurna IV (7525m), Mt. Annapurna south (7219m), Mt. Nilgiri (7041m), Mt. Fishtail also called Mt. Machhapuchhare (6998m), Mt. Hiunchuli (6441m), Mt. Lamjung Himal (6986m),Tukuche peak (6920m), Tilicho peak (7134m). Furthermore, there are the settlements of diverse communities such as Bramin, Chhetree, Tibetian sherpa, Thakali, magars, Tamang, Gurung. Subsequently, it is the trail which is rich in wild animals such as Mountain Thair/ Goat, Leopards, Jackal, birds such as pheasant, long-tail birds among others.

After Manang, the terrain turns to high altitude ice desert over Thorung La Pass at 5416m, down to Muktinath, Jomsom reaching the forested areas below Tukuche. Highlights of the Annapurna Circuit trek include the Kali Gandaki River on the other side of the Thorung La Pass which is considered the deepest ravine in the world, five times deeper than the Grand Canyon. The Kali Gandaki River cuts deeply between Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m) to the west and Mt Annapurna (8091m) to the east.
Continue down the Kali Gandaki gorge amidst some stunning views of mountains and diverse flora and fauna in the lower forests, passing through Ghorepani with a magnificent sunrise view from nearby Poon Hill. The Annapurna Circuit trek ends here and you can relax near the lake city of Pokhara.

Day 01: Arrival and transfer to hotel in Kathmandu Upon arrival in Kathmandu.

Our airport representative will be waiting outside the airport terminal a few metres from the exit door. Please check your name at play card. He will bring you to hotel in kathmandu. The drive from the airport to the hotel is around 20 minutes

 

Day 02: Free day in kathmandu or self sightseeing around Kathmandu valley ( option are)

Day 03 - Kathmandu to Shayge trek to Jagat

Breakfast. Our trekking guide will come to the hotel at 07:00 hrs to pick you with private transport to leave for Besi Shahar (185km) and will take us about 6 hours. Along the journey you will witness some spectacular scenery of white mountains, green hills, rivers and hamlets. We overnight at a guesthouse.

Day 04 - Jagat to Dharapani

We start the day by descending on a steep slippery trail past amphitheatreshaped rice terraces. There will be a small hot spring after this descend. The rest of today’s trek will have us pass the river a few times and we will see a few waterfalls as well. As we near the village of Jagat we will have a steep 200m climb to a trail that has been blasted out of the rock face. 15 minutes below this village we can visit another small hot spring. From Jagat we climb up to Chamje (6 hrs).

Day 05 - Dharapani to Chame

Today we will do the 940 meter ascent to Bagarchap through bamboo and rhododendron forests, on a trail high above the river bank. We will pass the village of Tal at 1700 meter which lies at the foot of a large waterfall. The trail crosses a broad, flat valley that was once a lake (Tal means lake) after which we will cross the Marsyangdi by a 60 meter long suspension bridge. The trail will climb up from a second suspension bridge to a stone kani (an arch over the trail) which marks the entrance to Dharapani at 1960 meter. All old villages from here to Kagbeni have these arches and they become more elaborate and
Picturesque as the Tibetan influence becomes stronger. The trail slowly climbs from here on through a forest of blue pine, spruce, hemlock, maple and oak to Bagarchhap. This is the first village on the trek with typical Tibetan architecture: closely spaced stone houses, with flat roofs piled high with firewood. (7 hrs).

Day 06- Chame to Pisang (3190m)

We will first pass the older part of Chame and climb up to Telekhu at 2840 meter and continue with a long pleasant and mostly level walk through the forest to Brathang, which lies at 2950 meter. After the trail rounds a bend here we will see the first view of the dramatic Paungda Danda rock face, a tremendous curved slab of rock rising more then 1500 meter from the river. We will cross back to the south bank of the Marsyangdi on a suspension bridge at 3080 meter and then make a long gentle climb over a ridge through blue pine forests. After this the trek will be reasonably level as it heads to the upper part of Manang valley to Pisang. This town marks the beginning of the region known as Nyesyang, the upper portion of the Manang district (5 hrs).

Day 07 – Pisang to Manang (3540m)

Today our trek will slowly climb up to the Tibetan-style village of Bryaga at 3500 meter following the valley floor. At Bryaga we will see houses stacked one atop the other, each with an open veranda formed by a neighbour’s rooftop. The gompa, perched on a high crag overlooking the village, is the largest in the district and has an outstanding display of statues. We then continue through a very arid countryside, dominated by weird cliffs of yellow rock, eroded into dramatic pillars alongside the trail to reach today’s destination, the village of Manang, where the shops are surprisingly well stocked with all the things you might want to refuel on (5 hrs).

Day 08 - Manang Acclimatization Day

Today we stay in Manang where we can do a short hike to ascent slightly higher to for instance Khangsar, which is a 200 meter ascend. It is important to have a relatively restful day today, to allow your body to acclimatize to the higher altitudes and thinning air. It also gives us the possibility to wash some of our clothing.

Day 09 - Manang to Yak Kharka or Letdar (4250)

Trekking slowly upwards to Thorung La we will leave the large trees behind and see vegetation consisting mainly of scrub juniper and alpine grass and we will pass a few meadows where horses and yaks graze. After we reach Yak Kharka we will see herds of blue sheep grazing the steep slopes as well. About an hour after passing Yak Kharka we will arrive at Letdar (4:30 hrs).

Day 10 – Letdar to Thorang Phedi

Again a relatively easy day to get used to the altitude before we have to cross the highest point in the trek, and possibly the highest point you have been on in your life. From Letdar we will continue to climb along the east bank of the Jarang Khola to Thorung Phedi, a rock-strewn meadow surrounded by vertical cliffs at 4420 meter. Blue sheep and even snow leopards can be sometimes seen in this valley. High in the skies above us we can see lammergeyers and Himalayan griffons circling around (3-4 hrs).

Day 11-Thorang Phedi via Thorang La Pass (5416m) - Muktinath (3800m)

Today is a long trek starting before sunrise at maybe 04:00 hrs to reach the pass by 09:00/10:00 hrs at the latest, as otherwise weather conditions will greatly affect the journey. We cross over at an altitude of 5416m so can be exposed to strong winds if crossing too late. Local people have used this trail for hundreds of years to bring herds of sheep and yaks in and out of Manang Thus the trail, while often steep, is well defined and easy to follow. Snow can block the pass at any time of the year if there has been an unseasonable storm. It takes from four to six hours from Thorung Phedi to the pass, but the many false summits mean the climb seems to go on for ever. At the Thorung La pass, with its traditional prayer flags and stone cairn we will have outstanding views. You can see the Annapunas, Gangapurna and Khatung Kang, a heavily glaciated peak. Amazingly there is a teashop here on top of the pass at 5416 meter. From here we start a long descend of about 1600 meter with outstanding views of Dhaulagiri mountain standing alone in the distance across the valley. After the trail becomes less steep we will enter grassy fields and cross meadows to our final destination of Muktinath, which means place of Nirvana and is home to the Muktinath temple as well as several monasteries. It is said that all sorrows you feel are relieved when visiting the Temple, which is a scared pilgrimage site to both Hindus and Buddhists. The main pilgrimage normally takes place in September. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has 108 waterspouts around it from which Holy water pours. Another attraction nearby is the Jwala Mai Temple and this contains a spring and an eternal flame fed by natural underground gas (9 hrs).

Day 12 - Muktinath to Marpha

From today we will follow the “Jomsom trek” in reverse order. We will first go down to Kagbeni, which is a 990 meter descend through meadows, streams and fruit trees like peach orchards. Then we will continue going down to Jomson (more correctly Dzongsam, or “new fort”). Our descend continues through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Marpha. Marpha is home to many apple orchids as well as all the various food products made from the fruit. Apple Brandy is a local specialty that you may be lucky enough to taste en route (6 hrs).

Day 15 - Marpha to Ghasa (2080m)

This day will be a rewarding day when we trek further down the Kali Gandaki valley alongside the Kali Gandaki river to Ghasa. We will pass the villages of Tukuche at 2580 meter and Larjung at 2560 meter. We then cross the the Kali Gandaki river by a high suspension bridge and continue through an area covered with fir, juniper and cypress trees. Towards the village of Kalopani (2530m) we will have splendid 360˚ views of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, the three Nilgiris, Fang and Annapurna I. After crossing another very long suspension bridge (107 meter long) we will reach Ghasa, our base for this night (6 hrs).

Day 13 - Ghasa to Tatopani (1190m)

Today our trek leads us through the steepest and narrowest part of the Kali Gandaki valley; much of the way is cut through solid rock and subject to frequent landslides. Before we reach the village of Dana (1450m) we pass the Rupse Chhahara (‘beautiful waterfall’). Descending further down past several landslides we will reach Tatopani, meaning hot water, which is situated on the riverbanks where we will stop to make the most of a well deserved hot bath (5 hrs).

Day 14 - Tatopani to Ghorepani (2834m)

Leaving the hot springs behind us we have a day of climbing ahead of us to Ghorepani. We leave the Kali Gandaki valley and we will follow the Ghar Khola river and cross this river on an old swaying bridge. We will continue ascending to Ghara (1780m) and Shika (1935m) where there still is a British army training centre. The last part of the trail today will have us climbing through rhododendron and magnolia forests to Ghorepani, where we will arrive mid afternoon (7 hrs).

Day 15 - Ghorepani (2834m) to Poon Hill (3210m) via Tadapani (2520m)

An early start and an hour’s hiking to Poon Hill (3195m) leads us to a brilliant spectacle, this viewpoint provides an unobstructed beautiful sunrise over the high Himalayas. After spending about 40 minutes on the hillside, we come back to Ghorepani for a hot breakfast, and start walking to Tadapani. From Ghorepani the trail climbs along ridges and through pine and rhododendron forests and if the weather allows it we have a panorama all the way south to the plains of India. The trail follows a stream bed which becomes larger as we continue. The stream has some clear pools alongside the trail and finally becomes a series of waterfalls. Today’s final destiny is the village of Tadapani, meaning ‘far water’ and the water supply for this village is a long distance below (5 hrs).

Day 16 - Tadapani to Ghaundrung (1950m)

The Ghaundrung trail descends steeply through forests to the village of Ghaundrung where we will arrive around noon. We will overnight here so have the afternoon to visit the Annapurna conservation office and museum. As well as take time to explore this maze like village (3 hrs).

Day 17 - Ghaundrung to Pothana (1910m) and Phedi (910m)


Day 18 - Pothana (1910m) to Phedi (910m) drive back to Pokhara

 

Day 19: Return back to Kathmandu by tourist bus. The bus journey will take 5 to 6 hours


Day 20: Free day in Kathmandu and shopping

Treks Grades

Our Treks have been graded Easy, Moderate and Strenuous depending on their difficulty. (More difficult treks are possible, but we would tend to categorise them as expeditions). We have listed a definition for each category.

We strongly advise against being too ambitious first time out – most trekkers return to Nepal again and again you can gradually increase your trek grade each time.

Easy:

 These trips can be enjoyed by anyone who leads a reasonably active life. The walking part of the trip is fairly easy, usually between 5 and 6 hours a day.
Note: Even on a easy grade trek there will be tough uphill sections on some days.

Moderate:

You will be walking 5-7 hours a day and will encounter some steep uphill and down hill sections. Some days may be at altitude. You should be fit before considering taking moderate grade trek.

Strenuous:

A combination of moderate of strenuous walks, with some very steep uphill and down hill sections, often at altitude. You will generally be walking 6-8 hours a day. You should be fit and should prepare physically before taking a strenuous trek.

Please not that the grading system is not a straight forward measure of how for you are walking.
Rather it is an overall indication ho how tough it will be and it takes into account the number of hours trekking, altitude gain/ loss and trail conditions (rough track, steep uphill etc.) and usual temperatures. So even though a trek is grade easy it does not mean you will never feel tired. Similarly inexperienced trekkers need not necessarily avoid treks graded Strenuous.

Finness

On any trek, there are some steeps ascents and descents so you require a reasonable level of fitness. The more physically fit you are, the more easily your body will adapt to hiking in the Himalayas. All treks demand a good day’s walking and it goes without saying that you should be pretty certain that you will enjoy a walking holidays before you consider trekking in Nepal. However you don’t have to be young or super-ft and age in itself is no barrier. There is physical exertion, but it is sustainable. Most people in good health who have prepared physically will have no problem in enjoying themselves. Before making your choice, things to consider are the duration of your trip. Its grading, style of accommodation and maximum and average altitude.


Altitude and Acclimatization

It is common in the Himalayas to trek above 4,500 and sometimes 5,500m. There is no need to worry unduly about altitude, but above 3,000 air becomes thinner and your performance may be affected. No one understands why some people are affected and others not.
Being young strong and fit is no guarantee of success. The only way to acclimatize is to ascend slowly. Our routes have been carefully designed based a year of experience managing possible altitude related difficulties. On this trek we do not ascend above 5,600.

Be aware that altitude sickness can be fatal, so if your leader advises you to stay at a certain altitude or descend, please do as instructed. He has the experience and is there to ensure your safety. If you do need to descend you will be accompanied by one of our team and a porter and will be well looked after. The descent may be just a short – term measure and does not necessarily mean you will be unable to complete your ascent. There is no shame in being affected or not reaching the highest point on a trek.

In addition we carry a Portable Altitude Chamber (PAC) on all of your trekking trips in Nepal. If you are suffering form altitude sickness and conditions do not allow for an immediate descent your leader will arrange for you to use the PAC. The PAC works by increasing the pressure inside the chamber, using a foot pump. At high altitude, this increased pressure delivers a therapeutically significant amount of extra oxygen which simulates a descent.

  • Sleeping bag – from October to mid march you will need a minus 20 sleeping bag. At other times of the year a minus 5 bag is adequate. Note these can be hired locally.
  • Down Jacket - this is advisable for treks form October to mid March. At other times a warm, windproof fleece jacket will be sufficient. Note that Down Jackets can be hired locally.
  • Sunglasses ( glare is a severe problem)
  • Torch (a head torch is particularly useful)

  • Any first aid equipment (eg knee support bandages) that you think you may neeed.

If you on an extended journey and would rather not being these items or if you do not wish to purchase them especially for the trip, they can be hired locally for US 1-2 per day, Note that although these sleeping bags and down jackets are of good quality, they are not washed often (Frequent washing means that they become less warm) so you are strongly advised to bring your own sleeping sheet.

    If you wear contact lenses, dust can be a big problem. If you are on a long trip you should also take the prescription for your glasses.

Insurance

Our tour prices do not include insurance however it is a condition of joining our tours that travelers are fully insured for any medical expenses they might incur while traveling. At the start of your tour the Tour Leader will ask to see your insurance document and will note down the policy number and emergency contact number.
We recommended a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers repatriation and evacuation in case of a medical emergency, cancellation and curtailment as well as baggage and valuables, If your tour involves certain adventurous activates (I.e. trekking, white water rafting or scuba diving etc) You will need to make sure your policy specifically covers these activates. You may also need specific cover for expensive camera equipment.

Many credit card companies offer “complementary travel insurance” however the majority of such policies offer virtually no cover and will not be accepted as adequate travel insurance. If you are planning on using credit card insurance you must bring along proof that the policy covers medical emergencies. Failure to be able to provide such proof to the Tour Leader will result in you being compelled to purchase a new approved policy before you can join the tour.


Vaccinations

It is your responsibility to ensure that you obtain any vaccinations, Precautionary or preventative Medicines for the countries you are visiting – or any which may be required by your home country upon your return. To find out which, if any, Vaccinations are mandatory or recommended for your destination Contact your local doctor, Immunization Centre or Medical Centre for up-to-date information.

If you need to arrange vaccinations or a supply of preventative medicine (e.g. Malaria tablets), you should Contact your doctor at least two Months before you depart. Some Inoculations require more than one Visit and can take several weeks to Administer.


Carry your Certificate

You should be issued with an International Certificate of Vaccination for each vaccination. Always carry these with you on your travels; they could provide essential information for doctors in the event that you fall ill whilst traveling.


 

Malaria


Malaria is common in many parts of Africa, Asia and South America. Protection is in the form of tablets, taken either daily or weekly, or both. The course of tablets should normally begin 1-2 weeks before you depart, Continue throughout your travels and for 4 weeks after your return. Although you can obtain tablets from most pharmacies without prescription,
you must check that they are Appropriate for the area you are Visiting. There are many different Strains of malaria and a large number of them are drug-resistant. It may be Necessary for you to take a Combination of tablets for the region you are visiting.
No malaria tablets guarantee complete protection. The most Effective protection against malaria is to avoid being bitten. Mosquitoes Mostly bite at dusk and dawn so one of the best ways to minimize the Chance of being bitten is to wear long Trousers, long sleeves and socks at these times. You should take a good insect repellent and apply it liberally. Repellents with a high concentration of DEET (at least 35%) are generally considered the most effective.

Diarrhoea

Sampling the local food and drink is often one of the highlights of traveling. In most cases the food is Freshly prepared for you and is completely safe to eat, however it will probably contain ingredients that you are not familiar with or may be Prepared in a different way. This change in diet is one of the most common causes of travelers diarrhea. You can reduce the likelihood of suffering diarrhea if you treat food and drink with caution – at least in the early stages of your travels. In almost every country it is possible to buy bottled water. This is usually very cheap and a lot more convenient than trying to purify or filter tap water. Beware of ice in drinks and make sure you wash your hands frequenty.
In general we do not recommend the use of anti-diarrhea pills as in most Cases they do not cure the problem, they merely put it on hold. However, there are of course situations where ‘Blocking up’ may be desirable, for Instance if you are embarking on a long bus ride. Diarrhoea which lasts for longer than 48-72 hours, shows signs of blood or Mucus or which is concurrent with other symptoms, such as a headache or high temperature, should always be taken seriously. Dehydration

In deserts, in the tropics and at high Altitude, your body can lose a lot of water. Dehydration also occurs when you are suffering from diarrhoea. The best way to avoid dehydration is to drink plenty of fluids. In most countries you can obtain “rehydration salts” or “electrolyte Solution”. Although these do not taste great, they restore the salts lost by your body. You can also make your own rehydration mixture by adding 4 tablespoons of sugar and ½ teaspoon of salt to one liter of clean water.
 

Emergency & Rescue

Trekkers should be aware that there is very little in the way of rescue organization for handling trekker's emergencies in Nepal. If you are trekking with a reputable trekking agency then their staff will be trained to handle most contingencies. if you are traveling independently then you will have to rely on your own initiative to handle any problems. This is why trekking alone is foolhardy in the extreme.

At all times try to be aware of the location of possible sources of help, medical clinics, police or army posts etc. Try to find out where there are working telephones or radios as you pass along the trails.

All trekkers should make sure that they are covered by a suitable travel insurance policy. This, at least, must cover the cost of a helicopter rescue, which is the only practical way of evacuating a seriously ill or injured patient from most of the trekking areas. It is essential to leave details of this policy with a responsible agency in Kathmandu. Either your trekking agency or your embassies are the obvious choices. Registering your details and intended plans with your embassy in Kathmandu is an extremely sensible step to take.

In the event that you do have a problem, and that problem cannot be solved with the resources at hand, then communications facilities must be located. Telephones or radios can be hard to find and may be a day or more away from the incident site. If it is possible to send a reliable person for help make sure that a note is sent detailing the location of the patient, the problem being experienced, specifying what help is needed. List what actions you are going to take in the interim. Fortunately, these days, helicopters are readily available, at a price, from Kathmandu and Pokhara. If a message can be sent then it is likely that a rescue can be mounted reasonably quickly.
